This report investigates the population and asset exposure for 136 of the world’s large port cities to current and future extreme coastal water levels. Global data has been used to estimate current population by elevation for each city and storm surge levels from which exposure to a 1:100 year event is calculated. Future exposure has been estimated for 2030, 2050 and 2070 using projections of sea level and socio-economic conditions based on the A1B storyline. Future climate projections include mitigation scenarios with peak emissions in 2016 and 2030 allowing the benefits of mitigation to be assessed.
